Dr. Oken is a graduate of the
University of Maryland with a B.S. in
Zoology, a M.S. in Parasitology as well as
his M.D. He completed his internship and
residency training at the University of
Maryland, followed by an additional year as
Chief Resident. He is board certified in
the specialty of Internal Medicine by the
American Board of Internal Medicine.
He has continued to be involved in
academic medicine and is a Clinical
Professor of Medicine at the University of
Maryland. He is also a Fellow of the
American College of Physicians; presently he
is the Chairman of the Health and Policy
Committee of the Maryland Chapter.
Dr. Oken served for 14 years as
Chairman of Medicine at Howard County
General Hospital, where he is currently on
staff as an Attending Physician. Dr. Oken
is listed in Best Doctors of America for
2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. He also
continues to do research with omega-3 fatty
acids and has published a variety of
articles in professional journals.
Dr. Oken’s central theme with patients
is stressing good nutrition, attaining a
healthy weight, getting regular exercise and
controlling stress. He continues to
spearhead this theme as Medical Director for
the Columbia Association. Dr. Oken has a

Dr. Oken has lived in Columbia since
1979. He and his wife, Janet, have been
involved in numerous fundraising activities
for various non-profits in the area. The
Oken’s have 3 daughters, Rachel, Stacey and
Lindsey, and an Old English Sheepdog named
Baron. |
